GOOD TO KNOW
Frequently Asked Questions
A little clarity for the journey ahead.
Whether you're just beginning to explore doula care or already preparing for your baby's arrival, here are answers to some of the questions you may have.
What does a birth doula actually do?
A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, and birth.
During pregnancy, I help you explore your options, understand your body, prepare for labor, and build confidence in your ability to navigate birth. During labor, I offer hands-on comfort, movement and positioning suggestions, encouragement, and a steady presence. I also help you communicate your needs and navigate decisions as they arise.
My approach goes beyond preparing for the physical act of giving birth. We make space for the emotional, mental, and personal transformation that comes with becoming a mother.
And there's meaningful research behind this kind of support. A Cochrane review involving more than 15,000 women found that continuous labor support was associated with shorter labors, fewer cesarean births, and more positive birth experiences.
What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?
A midwife is a healthcare professional who provides medical care during pregnancy, labor, birth, and sometimes postpartum. Midwives monitor the health of mother and baby, assess labor progress, and manage medical aspects of childbirth within their scope of practice.
A doula provides nonmedical support, focusing on your physical comfort, emotional well-being, education, and personal experience.
The two roles complement one another beautifully. Your midwife or doctor is responsible for your clinical care, while your doula is there to support you as a whole person.
If I have a supportive partner, do I still need a doula?
Not everyone needs a doula, but having a loving, supportive partner doesn't make doula care redundant.
Your partner knows you in ways no one else does. I bring knowledge of labor, practical comfort techniques, and experience supporting women through the intensity and unpredictability of birth.
One of my priorities is helping your partner feel prepared, confident, and involved. Rather than taking their place, I help create an environment where both of you feel supported.
And sometimes, your partner needs someone to lean on, too.
What makes your approach different from other doulas?
I don't believe choosing a doula should be about finding someone who is better than everyone else.
Many doulas offer similar services, and each brings her own experiences, philosophy, and way of caring for women.
My approach is deeply holistic. I see birth as more than a physical event, and my preparation honors the whole woman: her body, mind, emotions, spirit, and relationships. Through my Ten Moons framework, we explore not only how to navigate labor, but also the transformation unfolding throughout pregnancy and the transition into motherhood.
But more than anything, I believe the right relationship matters.
I encourage you to speak with several doulas, ask questions, and notice how you feel in their presence. Find someone with whom you can be vulnerable, someone who listens without judgment, and someone who makes you feel safe enough to turn inward.
Whether that person is me or another doula, what matters most is that you feel genuinely supported.
When is the best time to hire a birth doula?
Ideally, as early in pregnancy as possible.
While many people begin searching for a doula in their second or third trimester, beginning earlier gives us more time to build a relationship and prepare together.
I believe birth preparation is about much more than learning what happens during labor. Pregnancy itself is an extraordinary period of transformation, and there is so much we can explore throughout those months.
That said, it's never too late to reach out. If you're further along, we can discuss how to make the most of the time remaining.
Do you support hospital births, home births, and birth center births?
Yes! I support hospital births, home births, and birth center births throughout Burbank and the Greater Los Angeles area.
Whether you're looking for a home birth doula or planning to welcome your baby in a hospital or birth center, my role is to support you in the environment you've chosen.
I have a deep respect for physiological birth and the body's innate wisdom, but I also recognize that every woman, pregnancy, and birth is different.
My role is not to decide where or how you should give birth. It's to help you understand your options, prepare thoughtfully, and feel supported in the choices that are right for you.
What if I want an epidural, induction, or cesarean birth?
You still deserve thoughtful, compassionate, and continuous support.
Doula care is not reserved for unmedicated births. Whether you're planning an epidural, considering an induction, preparing for a cesarean, or hoping for minimal intervention, my role remains the same.
We can explore your options, discuss what to expect, prepare questions for your medical team, and find ways to make your experience feel as informed, supported, and meaningful as possible.
There is no single right way to give birth.
What if my birth doesn't go according to plan?
Birth is inherently unpredictable. Even the most carefully considered plans may need to change.
That's why I believe meaningful preparation isn't about trying to control every outcome. It's about developing the knowledge, confidence, flexibility, and inner resources to meet the experience as it unfolds.
If circumstances change, I'll help you understand your options, formulate questions, communicate your preferences, and feel supported through the decisions ahead.
A birth that unfolds differently than you imagined can still be an experience in which you feel respected, heard, and deeply supported.
Can I customize my care or add additional sessions?
Every woman's journey is different, and your preparation should reflect that.
I offer several levels of care depending on how much preparation and support you're seeking. While each package has its own structure, our sessions are shaped around your individual needs, questions, and circumstances.
Additional 90-minute sessions are available for $180.
You can explore the different care options, what's included, and the investment involved on my Care & Investment page.
Do you accept insurance for doula services?
At this time, I do not accept insurance directly, although I am working toward expanding payment options in the future.
Depending on your insurance plan or benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement or able to use HSA/FSA funds toward doula services. I recommend contacting your provider directly to understand your coverage and requirements.
If you have questions about payment or documentation, please don't hesitate to reach out.
What if I love your approach but can't afford your packages?
I understand that investing in birth support is a meaningful financial commitment.
I also believe that thoughtful, compassionate preparation should not feel entirely out of reach.
If my philosophy resonates with you, and you feel drawn to the way I approach pregnancy, birth, and motherhood, but finances are what stand in your way, please reach out.
We can have an open conversation about your circumstances and explore what's possible.

THE EVIDENCE BEHIND THE SUPPORT
Continuous support makes a difference.
Research involving more than 15,000 women has found that continuous labor support is associated with:
- 25% lower relative likelihood of cesarean birth
- Shorter labors, averaging approximately 41 minutes less
- 31% lower relative likelihood of a negative birth experience
These findings come from a 2017 Cochrane systematic review of continuous labor support, which included support from doulas and other companions. The evidence was generally rated low certainty, and individual outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
The World Health Organization recommends a companion of choice throughout labor and childbirth. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists also recognizes the benefits of collaboration between doulas and medical teams.
